The Brazilian Symposium on Rice Quality - which until the 4th edition was entitled South-Brazilian Symposium on Rice Quality - emerged to fill a scientific and technological gap in the country: approaching rice with a focus on food, analysis of its quality as such, predominantly from post-harvest, with greater breadth than what is done in the Brazilian Congress of Irrigated Rice. This concept is strongly based on industrialization and on the nutritional and nutraceutical properties of rice.
The first symposium was held in 2003. At the time, it was the idea of the Brazilian Post-Harvest Association (ABRAPOS) to hold regional events in the country with the most typical cultures in each region. To celebrate the 120 years of the Faculty of Agronomy “Eliseu Maciel” of the Federal University of Pelotas, and considering the tradition and the identification of the Faculty and the Region with rice, Labgrãos, with decisive support from ABRAPOS, decided to hold the “First Symposium South-Brazilian Rice Quality ”, inviting to join the organization the entities that traditionally hold the Brazilian Congress on Irrigated Rice, members of SOSBAI (Sociedade Sul Brasileira de Arroz Irrigado). Thus, IRGA, EMBRAPA (Research Centers for Pellets and Passo Fundo), EPAGRI-SC, UFPEL, UFRGS, UFSM, FURG and UFSC have actively participated in the Symposium since its creation. EMBRAPA in Londrina-PR started to participate in the fourth edition, while UNIPAMPA and EMBRAPA in Goiânia joined in the fifth.
In addition to official research institutions and federal universities based in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, CESA, EMATER-RS and CONAB (Superintendence of Rio Grande do Sul) have been important public support institutions. From the private initiative, since the first symposium there has been formal support from FEDERARROZ (Federation of Rice Associations of Rio Grande do Sul), from FEARROZ (Federation of Rice Cooperatives of Rio Grande do Sul), from SINDAPEL (Union of Industries of Rice Arroz de Pelotas), SINDARROZ-RS (Rio Grande do Sul Rice Industries Union), SINDARROZ-SC (Santa Catarina Rice Industries Union) and ABIAP (Brazilian Association of Parboiled Rice Industries). ABIARROZ (Brazilian Association of Rice Industries) was incorporated in the third edition.
The regional and national press, such as newspapers (Diário da Manhã, Diário Popular and Zero Hora), RBS-TV (Rede Brasil Sul de Comunicações, affiliated to Rede Globo) and radio stations have been incorporated as important supporting bodies disclosure. Sector companies have participated in the group of exhibitors.
The second edition was held in 2005, the third in 2008, the fourth in 2010, the fifth in 2012 and the sixth in 2016. As of the 5th edition, in 2012, it was decided that the symposium would be held every 4 years. As a result, according to SOSBAI, the Brazilian Irrigated Rice Congress is held in odd years and, from the third Edition on, in 2008, the Brazilian Symposium on Rice Quality takes place in even years.
In previous editions there are the following records: between 44 and 93 complete works presented and published in the Anais (from institutions in RS, SC, PR, MT, GO, MG, SP and Argentina); between 460 and 580 registered participants and between 38 and 42 institutions, entities and companies including promoters, exhibitors and support bodies.
The event is traditionally composed of five Sessions: A) Lectures and panels; B) Session of technical meetings of entities, working groups and national thematic commissions; C) Posters of scientific works; D) Exhibition of products and processes; E) Solemn session of homage to Institutions and Personalities linked to post-harvest and the quality of rice in agribusiness, of great services provided to the grain production chains, especially rice.
In the first five editions, Symposium books were published, containing chapters written by researchers and invited professionals along with the proceedings of the event. In the sixth edition the annals were presented online.
Initially scheduled for August 26 to 28, 2020, the 7th edition may be postponed due to the recent covid-19 pandemic. The 7th Brazilian Symposium on Rice Quality (7th SBQA), with the theme of Quality from Field to Table, will be held jointly by the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) and Labgrãos.
The 7th edition of the symposium will have some news. Among them, the showcase of products and processes and the oral presentation of selected works. In the showcase, each sponsoring company will have up to 10 minutes to present their products and / or processes in the auditorium, to the general public, with the use of slides being allowed. For the presentation of papers in oral form, 6 papers will be selected, based on innovation and technical-scientific merit judged by the work evaluation committee.
